Another successful camp was held from July 27th through August 2nd at the Roscommon DNR facility. Sixteen youths (12 from Illinois and 4 from Michigan) participated. Here’s a list of just some of the activities:
- Building cover shelters on the Au Sable Main Branch
- Conducting a census with the DNR by shocking fish
- Gathering fish samples for the state lab to test for Whirling Disease
- Measuring water quality and stream flow at Smith’s Bridge on the Au Sable
- Collecting insects (morning and evening) to connect the hatches with the choice of fly
- Learning about forestry practices by visiting Hartwick Pines
- Visiting a hatchery to learn the differences between native and hatchery grown trout
- Observing the Pigeon River restoring itself after removal of a dam near Vanderbuilt
- Fishing, fishing and more fishing
- Having fun!
We thank Greg Prosen (Camp Director) and the other volunteers Darwin Adams, Laura Andersen, Dick Augustine, Willie Beshire, Valerie Blaine, Steve Carlson, Barry Coddens, Myra Coddens, Fred Hodge, Matt Jennings, Keith Sutherland, and Joe Weisenberger for their work and dedication.
